What are the phlebotomy certification requirements? That depends on the organization. There are a number of organizations that provide certifications for phlebotomists. Here you will learn about some of the organizations and their certification requirements.
NHA
The NHA or National Healthcareer Association offers phlebotomy technician certification for qualified applicants. After taking the exam, you would be considered a CPT, a certified phlebotomy technician. The cost of the exam is currently $105. The NHA provides guides to help applicants study for the test. Some of the subjects included on the test are:
- How to assemble equipment
- How to dispose of containers for needles
- How to look for abnormal cells in the blood and other bodily fluids
- How to talk to patients
- How to take vital signs
- How to test for the presence of certain drugs in the blood
- How to perform venipuncture
That is not an exhaustive list, but it does cover the basics. Most of the exams administered by other organizations cover those subjects as well. ASCP-BOC
ASCP-BOC is short for the American Society for Clinical Pathology’s Board of Certification. The organization certifies dozens of different laboratory professionals and according to surveys, certified lab personnel earn up to 14% more than those who are not certified.
There are six ways to meet the ASCP’s phlebotomy certification requirements and take the test. For any of the six routes, it is necessary to pay the $125 application fee. The fee is not refundable. Be sure you have all of your documentation and that you do meet the requirements before sending in your application fee. The American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians
Sometimes called the American Association of Phlebotomy Technicians or the National Phlebotomy Association, the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians is one of the best known organizations in the country. The Society’s phlebotomy certification requirements are relatively simple.
In order to take the exam, you must have worked as a part or full time phlebotomist during the past year. You must have a letter from your supervisor stating that you take blood samples regularly. The letter must be written on the facility’s stationary and signed by your supervisor.
If you have not worked as a phlebotomist, you can still meet the Society’s phlebotomy certification requirements by completed an accredited training program that includes a documented clinical portion. In order to be allowed to sit for the exam, you must have had at least 100 documented successful venipunctures.
The fee charged by the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians is currently $55 plus the annual membership fee. You are allowed to become a member prior to passing the exam.
