Approved phlebotomy training in Bay Area is offered at the Bay Area Medical Academy, one of only two recognized by the California Department of Public Health for licensure. It has a San Jose branch aside from its San Francisco main headquarters. It has three phlebotomy technician courses available for Certified Phlebotomy Technician, Limited Phlebotomy Technician and CPT1 for Experienced Phlebotomists. Class length also varies. There is the intensive day course which runs for two weeks, a five-week course conducted on weekends, and a four-week evening class course. Total number of hours for the classroom segment is 60 hours. A 40-hour externship only follows after completing the instructional component and passing the certification exam. This is in compliance for the state licensure regulations for phlebotomists. The City College of San Francisco also offers a phlebotomy program in 10 urban locations within the Bay Area. It runs for four to five months and includes classroom and externship to meet the licensure requirements of the state.
