The program is intensive and completed in five weeks. It provides instructional, laboratory and hands-on experience. A total of 60 hours, inclusive of externship will be given to students not just within the campus but in affiliate medical facilities within the area. Following successful completion of the program, students can take the exam to become a certified phlebotomy technician granted by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists. There is basic and advanced phlebotomy courses offered at the Western Nebraska Community College. It is an extensive training program that familiarizes the students not just with the skills of a phlebotomist but all aspects of drawing and collecting blood and other specimens, including safety principles, transportation and laboratory practices. Like most training, there is hands-on experience provided to students in actual workplaces.
